IELM 230 Industrial Data Systems, Fall 2005
Assignment 1. Due Date: Sept 28, Max score: 16

Q1. Conceptual Design [12 pts]
You are consulted to write a Database for computer-booking of the Sports facilities for HKUST. There are many sports facilities (e.g. Basketball court, Volleyball court, Badminton courts, Table tennis etc.) Some courts may only be booked by students; some may only be booked by staff; others can be booked by anyone. Each booking is for 1 hour, and in fixed time slots (but the open-time of different courts may be different). Each person can hold up to 10 bookings at any given time, but no two bookings can be concurrent (e.g. the same person cannot book tennis court No 4 as well as Badminton court No 2 from 10am-11am on 13th November 2005).
The booking office also records if the person who made the booking actually used it or not. If the person did not use his booking for three times or more during a one month period, he will not be allowed to book any court for the next month.

Make an ER diagram to represent the information that will be needed to construct the database. You may use the SAO FBS (online bookings) as a guideline. If you need to make any further assumptions, write them clearly.

Q2. ER diagrams [4pts]
The following is a partial ER diagram for movies. The following information is known:
Each movie is produced by one company, and has zero or more actors. Each actor has acted in one or more movies. Each company has produced one or more movies. Based on this, mark all the cardinality ratios, and all the participation constraints.
